Whip It is a coming of age drama mixed with the intensity of roller derby, and while this quirky movie is enjoyable, it’s only average.
The sport the movie features, roller derby, is awesome to watch. However, the film overall suffers from a mediocre plot and script. Almost every conflict within the film gets resolved way too easily. And the acting is just ordinary. For the most part it feels like the actresses are not entirely comfortable with the roller girl roles they are portraying. Ellen Paige does play her eccentric teenage role well though. Bliss (Paige’s character) finds herself caught between a rock and a hard place, or a beauty pageant and a roller derby rink.
The one thing I really liked about Whip It was how it highlighted Austin. As a native Austinite, I appreciated the way the film represented the capital of Texas. It was smart to showcase all the weird and well-known sites Austin offers, like Lucy in Disguise (a famous costume shop) and the “Hi, How Are You” frog mural.
Even though Whip It is not spectacular, it is a fun movie that teaches viewers about a unique sport.
