I love the minions. They are the reason people go see the Despicable Me movies and who could blame them.  There is something about the minions that mix the perfect balance of cute and funny. And probably, to the surprise of many, they have become a cultural phenomenon.

But the most surprising thing about Despicable Me 2 is the fact that it doesn’t just rely on the minions to do all the work, but it also utilizes the other characters and develops their relationships in a very effective way. Despicable Me 2 makes me actually care about this unique family and that’s more than I can say about most live-action films this summer.

Despicable Me 2 works because every character is interesting and the story is fresh. It also builds upon the first movie because now Gru, the villain the hero, has to deal with common parenting issues such as boys trying to date his daughter. He also ventures in the dating scene himself, all while trying to save the world.

Despicable Me 2 has a lot to say about society if you look beyond the surface. It’s cute but also gets the audience invested. This is definitely a movie to take your family to.

Wow. You are so complicated.”
